Background of the Study
Sleep disorders are prevalent among hospitalized patients, contributing to poor patient outcomes, including delayed recovery, increased risk of complications, and longer hospital stays. Hospitalization itself can disrupt patients' normal sleep patterns due to factors such as the hospital environment, medical interventions, and underlying health conditions. The management of sleep disorders in hospitalized patients requires a comprehensive approach that includes non-pharmacological interventions (such as cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia), pharmacological treatment, and addressing the underlying causes of the sleep disturbance.
Nurses play an essential role in the management of sleep disorders in hospitalized patients by conducting sleep assessments, implementing appropriate interventions, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to optimize patient care. However, a lack of training in sleep disorder management can lead to insufficient care and ineffective interventions, particularly in hospitals with limited resources. At Osun State Specialist Hospital, nurses’ knowledge of sleep disorders and their ability to manage these conditions may be influenced by factors such as education, training, and availability of resources.
This study aims to assess nurses' knowledge and management practices regarding sleep disorders in hospitalized patients at Osun State Specialist Hospital. Identifying gaps in knowledge and practices will provide insights into how sleep disorder management can be improved within the hospital setting.
Statement of the Problem
Sleep disorders in hospitalized patients can significantly affect their recovery and overall well-being. Nurses, being primary caregivers, are in a pivotal position to manage these disorders; however, their knowledge and ability to intervene effectively may be limited, especially in settings where specialized training is lacking. At Osun State Specialist Hospital, there is a need to assess nurses' knowledge and management practices regarding sleep disorders to improve patient care and optimize recovery outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of knowledge of nurses at Osun State Specialist Hospital regarding the management of sleep disorders in hospitalized patients.
2. To evaluate the management practices of nurses at Osun State Specialist Hospital in addressing sleep disorders in hospitalized patients.
3. To identify the challenges nurses face in managing sleep disorders in hospitalized patients and propose strategies to improve management.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of knowledge of nurses at Osun State Specialist Hospital regarding the management of sleep disorders in hospitalized patients?
2. What are the management practices of nurses at Osun State Specialist Hospital in addressing sleep disorders in hospitalized patients?
3. What challenges do nurses at Osun State Specialist Hospital face in managing sleep disorders in hospitalized patients?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses at Osun State Specialist Hospital have limited knowledge regarding the management of sleep disorders in hospitalized patients.
2. Nurses at Osun State Specialist Hospital do not consistently implement effective management practices for sleep disorders in hospitalized patients.
3. Limited training and resources are significant barriers to the effective management of sleep disorders in hospitalized patients at Osun State Specialist Hospital.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in medical, surgical, and intensive care units at Osun State Specialist Hospital who are involved in the care of patients with sleep disorders. The limitations of the study include the potential for recall bias and the reliance on self-reported data for assessing knowledge and practices.

• Sleep Disorders: Conditions that disturb normal sleep patterns, including insomnia, sleep apnea, and circadian rhythm disorders.
• Knowledge: The understanding nurses have regarding sleep disorders, their causes, symptoms, and treatment options.
• Management Practices: The actions taken by nurses to assess, intervene, and address sleep disorders in hospitalized patients.
